Podcasts have become very popular. According to “The Infinite Dial Study 2019,” published this month by the New Jersey-based Edison Research and Triton Digital, a Los Angeles digital audio technology company, more than 50 percent of all Americans older than 12 have listened to a podcast — and one-third of the population, or about 90 million, had listened to one within the past month. Even as online listening reached a high, social media usage stalled: The study found that the percentage of Americans who used Facebook had dropped to 61 percent from 67 percent in 2017, a decline of about 15 million people.
The watch industry has been picking up on this. In the last couple of years, a new breed of horology podcasts has popped up, created by online magazines, retailers and independent voices. And some have been reporting strong listening numbers.
The owners of Hodkinee Radio, the podcast from the online watch resource Hodkinee, said that since its introduction in July 2018, their podcasts had been downloaded more than 1.2 million times.
So which watch podcasts do some of the watch industry’s most influential voices favor? Here are their replies, which were edited and condensed.

“My personal experiences as a watch collector dovetail perfectly with the evolution of Hodinkee. I remember watching the first episode of ‘Talking Watches,’ with John Mayer, open-mouthed, as he seemed to express everything I felt about collecting at that time. [The online video series was introduced in 2013.] And now with Hodinkee Radio, I feel that Ben Clymer and his team have delivered that same product, a reference point for collectors as much as a moment for relaxation, in a go-anywhere format that will inspire the new generation of collector as much as they inspired me.”
Author of “A Man & His Watch” (Artisan, 2017)
“I recently started listening to podcasts more because, selfishly, I found myself on them as a guest talking about my book. I like when the podcast is casual and conversational — I’m not really into the geeked-out technical chatter. I like when they can be smart, insightful, personal and just plain fun — a pleasant distraction. My favorites are those I’ve personally been involved with, but I guess I’d pick out Watch and Listen with Matt Farah [of the YouTube automotive channel The Smoking Tire] and Cameron Weiss [founder and head watchmaker of Weiss Watch Company]. Theirs is a really unique perspective.”
Chief executive, The Watches of Switzerland Group
“My interest in podcasts is thanks to my sons — they manage to get more education from podcasts than from the schooling I’ve paid for over the years. I listen predominantly to Hodinkee Radio and The Worn & Wound Podcast. Both are clearly experts, and I enjoy listening to their detailed views on the big shows, the business of watchmaking and the product. We launched the Calibre Podcast last autumn. It’s primarily an educational tool: We talk with industry leaders such as LVMH’s Jean-Claude Biver, and discuss brands such as Rolex with experts like James Dowling. We’ve had 10,000 downloads, and 90 percent of our audience listen the whole way through.”

“I really enjoy listening to Hodinkee’s almost National Geographic-esque The Grey NATO podcast with Jason Heaton and James Stacey. It’s a really versatile podcast about watches, adventure and the outdoor life. Their approach is refreshing because they discuss the actual use, and sometimes abuse, of watches. The occasional mention of Land Rover fits with one of my other passions, too. Although I would say that Jason and James owe me gas money for all the times I’ve made my drives a little longer to finish their episodes.”

“While Blamo! isn’t a purist’s watch podcast, it’s a genuine balance of watches, fashion, life and business storytelling, making it very enjoyable to listen to. A lot of the host, Jeremy Kirkland’s, guests bring watches up. They take a lighter but still informative approach to watches, rather than diving deep into complications. Blamo’s main appeal for me is its range of guests, some known in the industry, others a little more under the radar. Jeremy’s comfortable tone and questions allow you to hear people’s personal memories of how watches, style and business have shaped their lives and journey, which personally I find most intriguing.”B:
